Descrizione generale:

The crafting of wrought iron in Sardinia is traditionally associated with the creation of some functional tools useful to perform house, and before the twentieth century also field work.

In the agricultural and pastoral contexts, the blacksmith was essential for the production and maintenance of the equipment necessary for various activities; frequent use tools were wagons, plows, cutting tools and various types of tools equipped with a wooden handle: hoes, shovels, rakes, pickaxes etc.

Crafting more aesthetic, still functional, objects, focused on the production of domestic tools, in particular, kitchen tools: the tripod to store the pots on the hearth, the lidded pots, the grills, the skewers and the skewer holders were found in all houses and the more one owned, the wealthier one appeared. The grills and the skewers were stored in special wall racks and, together with baskets and terracotta vessels, richly decorated the room. Many of those artefacts were part of bridal trousseaux which were expanded over time.

Other artefacts used in the domestic tradition are the oil lamps. Generally crafted out of a single square piece, with all their four spout-shaped corners, the lanterns featured symbolic and good luck decorations (crosses and other geometric shapes) carved on the supporting module base.

Found only in well-off homes, starting from the second half of the nineteenth century, wrought iron beds replaced the old wooden four-poster beds, always decorated with textiles and filet embroidery, ingirialettu.

Since the second half of the nineteenth century, with new dynamics resulting from the Unity of Italy, wrought iron was also used in architecture, both as a structural and a decorative element. In the new residential concept, more and more popular in the main cities, façades were embellished with parapets, window grates and wrought iron top portals were decorated with different motifs.
