Horizontal (or flat) loom in Sardinia 
 
The Sardinian traditional loom usually mounts 2 or 4 heddles (there may be more, but always an even number). When 4 or more are mounted, it differs greatly from the looms used in the rest of Italy since it lacks pulleys or fly presses connecting all the heddles. It is not equipped with the device that rises one heddle while it lowers the other three.  In the whole of Sardinia, indeed heddles are installed as independent pairs, each of which is connected to a single pair of pedals.  In Sardinian looms, a regular 4-pedal keyboard is installed: a single pedal releases only the threads drawn in a single pair of heddles, while those in the other heddle do not move.  Ancient looms used to be smaller than the modern ones and, therefore, could only craft small-sized artefacts.
