Crafting centres: local distribution

The Salix genus includes about 300 species characterized by rapid growth and poor longevity. They are trees which grow easily near watercourses and moist soils, as high as 25 m, with an open canopy and thin branches, flexible and tough, with yellowish or gray-reddish bark. Leaves are lanceolate and thorn-shaped, featuring deciduous and small stipels, petiolate and finely saw-toothed; they are crinite on both sides when they are young. The wood is fairly soft but durable over time and the long and thin suckers may easily be manipulated. Suckers of at least two years may be used to create the weave; harvesting takes place once the wood has reached the right ripeness. They are used to draw the warps and wefts of small artefacts; to dress flasks and bottles, baskets and hand-baskets with an arched handle, made with the "warp and weft" technique. Willow is used in weaving in association with other types of wood and reeds.
