Crafting centres: general spread

It is an evergreen plant, normally not exceeding 5-6 m of height, typical of the Mediterranean maquis. Thanks to its ancient cultivation, it thrives in a large geographic area. It is different from cultivated olive trees (Olea europea var. europea) for its spiky branches, small fruit and leaves and shrubby appearance often shaped by the wind. It has a fairly smooth bark depending on its age, ash grey-coloured; persistent and opposing oval and oblong leaves, leathery, dark green above and silver below. Its small white flowers are gathered in spikes, which bloom in March-April; fruits are small and oval, first pale green, later on reddish-black once maturity is reached, with low pulp and poor in oil. Its wood, hard and compact, is used in a number of works. Being very long-living plant, it has the exceptional ability to grown back from the stump. In Sardinia, in the past, many wild olive plants were organized into olive groves, with a number of varieties. Suckers of at least two years of age may be used to create the weave; harvesting takes place once the wood has reached the right ripeness, during summertime until autumn. After a thorough pruning, suckers are dried and stored in bundles and hung in well ventilated areas to be used throughout the year. They are used to weave several artefacts, made with the "warp and weft" technique. Oleaster is typically associated with the weaving of reed strips. The weaving carried out with use of thicker sticks, mostly by men, includes: arched-handled baskets, equipped with one or two handles, panniers, containers, fishing baskets, to carry fruit or other products, pischezones, pischeddas, scardeddus, coffettas, coffas, cadinos, govìnu, are just a few examples showing that there are different typological varieties produced almost throughout the island.
